Today’s topic: Contests
We often compete with and against other people. Sometimes with many people; sometimes with a few people.
Today’s question:
Do our results change with the number of people you compete with?
Yes, you tend to have better results if you think you are competing with fewer people. Researchers asked students to compete a quiz as quickly and as accurately as possible. The students were told that the top 20% would be given money. The first group were told that they were competing against 10 students. The second group were told they were competing against 100 students.
This is what they found:
Participants in the first group were much quicker and scored higher than the participants in the 2nd group.
Today’s advice
When you are in a contest, pretend you are only competing against a few people.
